OUR STORY
BY FOUNDER (DR. ATSU LATEY)
MindIT was borne out of a teacher’s plight for help.
In commemoration of World Health Day 2017,
the founder and CEO of MindIT, Dr Atsu Latey (then a 5th year medical student who had just returned
from a Psychiatry elective in New York University) featured an article in a local newspaper on how to
recognize depression in people. A teacher from a remote town in Ghana read the piece and identified
herself as being depressed and so she called him for help. She did not know she was depressed,
she did not know there was treatment available and she also did not know where she could get the help from.
She was importunate with her requests but unfortunately, he got out of touch with her and did not hear from her again.
It dawned on him that there may be some people who may be suffering the same predicament as her and so he thought of a
way to screen the Ghanaian population for mental illness and offer them care which is affordable and closest to them.
Fast forward, MindIT was born from a group of youth who believed they could provide their skills pro bono to develop innovative IT
tools to provide affordable and accessible mental healthcare to Ghanaians.
